Summer is here and that can mean only one thing… festival season is here! There are some top bands playing across a number of fantastic festivals happening in and around the local area - little more than a few minutes’ drive from Best Western Nottingham Derby Hotel.
Acts including Def Leppard, Smashing Pumpkins and the Manic Street Preachers will all be playing no more than a 20-minute drive away from our conveniently-placed Nottingham hotel. That is because, between 14-16 June, Download Festival takes place at Donington Park. Later in the summer, Wollaton Park plays host to Splendour Festival on 20 July.
Download Festival
If you are lucky enough to have a ticket for one of the most anticipated festivals of the year, you can look forward to seeing some of the world’s top rock bands performing over three days across four stages. Headliners include Def Leppard, Slipknot, Tool, Rob Zombie, Halestorm and Enter Shikari but, as ever, Download Festival offers more than just music.
This year will also see television tapings for WWE NXT UK take place at the festival. The wrestling promotion’s NXT brand has become a regular at Download Festival in recent years and now, with the birth of the UK brand, will see television coming to Donington Park. As well as British favourites Pete Dunne, Tyler Bate and Toni Storm, fans will also get to see the likes of NXT Champion Adam Cole, Matt Riddle and Kyle O’Reilly in action.
There will also be something for fans of stand-up comedy, with Mock The Week regular Ed Gamble, Jim Breuer, Aaron Simmonds and Allyson June Smith all performing on the Side Splitter Stage alongside a host of other hilarious comics. Of course, there will be plenty of other events going on at the festival where ticketholders can enjoy themselves, making for the ultimate weekend just down the road from us here at Best Western Nottingham Derby.
Splendour Festival
Indie rock fans should have a special place in their heart for Splendour Festival, which has brought the likes of the Kaiser Chiefs, Scissor Sisters, Feeder, Razorlight, Jake Bugg, Embrace and The Charlatans to Wollaton Park in Nottingham. This year’s festival is headlined by the Manic Street Preachers, with The Specials and Rag ‘n’ Bone Man providing chief support.
This one-day event, taking place on Saturday 20 July, comes at the height of summer, which will hopefully mean that all in attendance can bask in the sunshine and enjoy the music. Of course, if it does rain then that is all just part of the festival experience!
Should the weather take a turn and you do come away with more than your fair share of mud, don’t worry! When you stay with us at Best Western Nottingham Derby Hotel, you can make full use of our facilities. After a good night’s sleep, you can help yourself to breakfast at our onsite restaurant, The Grill at Twenty-Five.
Waterfront Festival
If neither Download nor Splendour Festival tickles your fancy, then fear not because Nottingham is also playing host to the Waterfront Festival on Saturday 13 July at The Canalhouse.
The best of Nottingham’s live music scene will be on show. With tickets priced at just £7, this will make for a fantastic day out and visitors can also sample the vast array of drinks on offer at The Canalhouse. This year’s theme is the dystopian dream. Last year’s event saw acts such as Unknown Era, Hallouminati, The Most Ugly Child, Doggen All Stars, Bud and Just James all perform at The Canalhouse.
The best part of this local festival? All proceeds will go to Forever Stars and Bras Not Bombs, two fantastic local charities working to make a difference. If for no other reason than to show support for these two charities, get yourself down to the Waterfront Festival, where live music and DJ sets will be going until the wee hours of the morning.
