Situated in the East Midlands and home to two well-established universities, the city of Nottingham is a culture-rich, thriving tourist destination also famous for its association with the legend of Robin Hood. With countless sights and attractions, exclusive shopping arcades, delicious eateries and fantastic hotels, Nottingham also boasts incredible entertainment options with an equally vibrant thriving nightlife to match.

A highly sought destination for many, Nottingham, also dubbed a City of Literature, is also home to many sites of Heritage, so if you are thinking of planning a trip to the city anytime soon, be sure to plan ahead and explore some (or all!) of the cultural sites the city has to offer. Although the city boasts numerous tourist attractions, here are just three for you to consider:

City of Caves

Nottingham is renowned for being the one city in Britain to contain more man-made caves than anywhere else; dating as far back as the Dark Ages. It is said that these caves were more than likely used as housing and raid shelters back in the 11th century. Although some of these caves have since been destroyed by various development projects, this unique underground tunnel maze, consisting of over 500 caves is now a remarkably well-known Nottingham attraction.

For those wishing to delve into the history and rich culture that was once under Nottingham, this archaeological adventure truly is a hidden gem just waiting to be discovered.

Sherwood Forest

Otherwise known as the former home of the legendary Robin Hood, the enchanting Sherwood Forest is steeped in history and adventure. Now officially part of the Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve and set in over 450 acres of grassland, the famous heritage forest is also home to England’s Tree of the Year 2014, the 1,000-year-old Major Oak, awarded by the Woodland Trust.

This once medieval hunting ground, set in 3,300 acres of woodland is also otherwise known as the Forest of Dean or Epping Forest.

Nottingham Castle

Linking back to Norman the Conqueror and also known as Castle Rock, the ancient Nottingham Castle boasts a wealth of history and culture to satisfy keen historians and visitors alike. Also home to numerous magnificently exquisite galleries encompassing spectacular paintings, glass, armour, silver and various textiles dating back to several ages, this beautiful 17th Century mansion impressively towers upon cliffs 130 feet high.

So whether you are visiting for the day or are planning to stop over for a long weekend at leisure, ensure you explore and discover the beauty that Nottingham truly is for a magical taste of the city’s distinctive charm.
